私が精神的に大丈夫ではなかった時、ふと目にした光景に心配事が消えたことがありました。
その瞬間を記憶にとどめておこうと刷った一作目。そういえば、この人、あの人、こんな時…。心配事を瞬時に取り除いてくれる大丈夫さんや時間の存在に気付きました。その人たちの姿を見たり時間を共有すると気持ちが和らぐのです。
サンスクリット語のマハープルシャ＝偉大な人の訳語で仏や菩薩など修行を積んだ尊い存在を意味する大丈夫。大丈夫さんたちを揃えたら心が整う曼荼羅のようになるだろうかと次から次へ刷りました。
色は、2021年の”Don’t Worry”で使った3色。黄は良い気、緑は自然、茶は大地。私が守られているイメージの作品です。
その3色でご紹介する大丈夫さんたちの多くは、職業柄ささやかなな暮らしをしています。彼らの一途な仕事ぶり、屈託のない笑顔、そしてさりげない会話から日々学ぶ私。大丈夫さんたちが勢ぞろいすることで、ケニアで暮らす私の生活が見えてくるかもしれません。そして、その普段の生活が私にとって軽やかな修行でもあり、いつか誰かの大丈夫さんになることができたら良いなと思うのです。

【Daijobu = It’s Okay、Don’t’ worry, No problem】
There was a time when I was in a state of low mood, one scene vanished my worries.
I decided to print that scene to keep that moment in my memory. After printing the 1st piece, I realized the existence of Daijobu people and Daijobu time that instantly dispel my worries. Just seeing those people or spending time with them soothes my heart.
“Daijobu” is a translation of the Sanskrit term “Mahapurusha” (great person), referring to revered beings such as Buddhas and Bodhisattvas who have undergone spiritual training. I wondered if gathering all these Daijobu people together might create a mandala-like composition that brings peace to the heart. So I printed them one after another.
The colors are the three I used for “Don’t Worry” printed in 2021: yellow for positive energy, green for nature, and brown for the earth. This piece embodies the image of me being protected.
Many of the Daijobu people I’m introducing in these three colors lead simple lives due to the nature of their work. I learn something from their single-minded dedication, carefree smiles, and casual conversations. Perhaps showing all these Daijobu people will offer you a glimpse into my life in Kenya. And I feel that this everyday life is a light form of spiritual practice for me. I hope that someday I can become someone’s Daijobu person myself.

Mari Endo 遠藤真理
1959年東京生まれ。1982年桑沢デザイン研究所ビジュアルデザインコースII部卒。1988年アフリカの文化を学ぶためケニア首都ナイロビの日本アフリカ文化交流協会に留学。夫の出身地であるケニア第３の都市キスムに約１年滞在した後、ケニアおよびタンザニアで日本企業の現地職員としてマネージメントに従事。2007年 現Kuona Artists Collective (旧Kuona Trust) で習得した 彫り進み多色木版画(※)の技能を生かし、2014年定年退職後、ケニアを拠点に版画家・墨イラストレーターおよびエデュケーターとして活動している。
※彫り進み木版画：１枚の版木で彫りと刷りを色を変えながら繰り返し、多色刷りの版画を作る技法。版木はどんどん削られ凸部分が変化するので１色目を刷った枚数のみがエディションとなり刷り増しはできない。

Mari Endo
Born in Tokyo, Japan in 1959, Mari Endo graduated from Kuwasawa Design School with a degree in visual design in 1982.
She landed in Nairobi, Kenya in 1988 to pursue cultural studies at Japan Africa Culture Interchange Institute. She stayed in her husband’s homeland, Kisumu, from 1988 to 1989.
In 2007, she learnt reduction(※) woodcut printmaking in Kuona Artists Collective ( former Kuona Trust) in Nairobi.
After retiring from a Japanese trading company in Tanzania in 2014, she now spends her days in Kenya doing various activities from printmaking, Japanese ink painting and teaching art.
※Reduction woodcut print is multi-layer print form a single woodblock with the repeating process of carving and printing. Once the print is finalized, no more prints can be produced as the surface of woodblock is reduced.
